applying for a mortgage while on maternity leave

I am currently on maternity leave and will be returning to full time work in October this year. My husband and I would like ot move closer to work before then. However, we've just been told that we don't qualify for the mortgage amount we want because I am on maternity leave and my payslips only show the statutory maternity benefit, not my normal salary. Could someone in the know please confirm this? Do you know if there is a workaround?
Thanks in advance!

My wife and I have just done the same thing. She doesn't go back to work till November. Nationwide have accepted us though, they just wanted proof of her salary and confirnation from her workplace that she would be going back to work and earning that salary.0

As per craigs answer, there are lenders that will consider your situation favourably as long as you know what salary, date and hours you will return to work on. Every lender treats this differently so rather than trying to get round their policy, try a new lender!LBM 1/1/2013: £2500 od £10929 loan £5000ish loan
