Getting Married / borrowing more

Hello there,

Curious where to go in an unusual position.

I used a £75000 deposit to buy a £150k house in 2007.

In 2009 I consolidated my credit cards (approx £10k) on to the mortgage and reduced the term also.

I'm getting married in a fortnight. My wife-to-be and I earn similar salaries and would like to sell my flat and buy a house in the region of £250k - in a year or so.

My fiance recently moved in with me and since has been refused credit (to buy a new car), so I have applied for it and got the credit fine.

I'm concerned that when we apply for a mortgage together, she still may not have enough history. Should I change my bank account to a joint one?

Should I wait until we go to get the mortgage together? Or would it improve our chances of getting the mortgage by taking action now?

Thanks in anticipation..

Did she get refused due to bad credit on her file or a lack of credit history?

I'd check her credit history files first to see if anything adverse / incorrect exists.

You can get these for a couple of quid. Google "statutory credit report".

That would be the best place to start from.
You probably don't want to link yourself to her financially until you know her history isn't going to hurt you (even by accident).
  • I believe its lack of credit history due to her being newly in the flat with me. I've been in the flat for four years and never been knocked back.

I believe she had no adverse problems at her other flat.

    Thanks for your help.

Tell your wife to be to register on the electoral roll straight away (v important) get a credit card/store card and create a payment profile, ie spend £50 and pay £50 off each month. This will improve their credit file in a very short space of time. Good Luck
