I have made up my mind to leave, but this is due to a breakdown of trust, I was perfectly happy to stick out my contract before all this happened and I don't believe for one second that they will give me a reduction in hours, I think they are just trying to get me to say the reason I am off sick is because you won't give me what I want, which is not entirely true as there is soo much more to it than that, but it's so difficult to explain.

I've seen the way they operate and how manipulative they are and I'm not sure I can continue working for them knowing this but I don't want them to think they can get away with treating people like this either.

How can it be a breakdown of trust, you say you were happy to stick out the contract before all this happened ? You took on a full time contract with them, then you asked to change it which was not possible. I understand how you feel beacuse of what everybody told you but ultimately it's down to management, not the rest of the staff to sort out. If they can't change your hours and you don't have childcare then you have no other option really.

And what harm will it do, if you are determined to resign, to give them a chance to change your hours? There has been no breakdown of trust, and frnakly you were not prepared to stick out the contract - because the contract is full-time and you started all this because you were unable to continue to work full-time. Frankly, however unreasonable they may have been - and I do not know whether refusing was reasonable or not, but it was lawful - you are being just as unreasonable. You took on a full-time contract and that was what you agreed to. Asking them to change the contract was your decision, and I understand entirely why you want this - but it is you asking for the variation because you didn't want to "stick it out". If being in employment isn't important to you, or if there are plenty of jobs where you are, then fine. But what harm can be done by hearing them out?

I'm not saying their refusal was unreasonable, I fully appreciate that I have no right to expect them to accommodate my needs, it was the manner in which it was done which is hard to bear.

The upshot is I cannot cover childcare for the full 6 weeks holiday whilst working full time, this was a fact I discussed with my employer back in April and feel that if I hadn't have been misled into thinking I could sort something out then I would have handed my notice in to take effect from the school holidays and would have been looking for something else in the meantime.
