How long does an authorisation hold last on a debit card payment?

I recently tried to purchase some clothes from a US website, however during the checkout process the site crashed. The amount i'd spent was taken away from my available balance, however my order hadn't gone through, and the company had no record of me. They said the transaction wouldn't go through and the funds would be released back into my account.

How long should this usually take to happen?

    Varies from bank to bank. Anything from 48 hours to 10 days. Best to talk to your own bank/branch to check their timescale.

    Not really, 10 days maximum but will more than likely clear down when the retailer reconciles that day.
    These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

    I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

    Have things changed? Should be 3 working days. Or get them to fax your bank confirming they dont intend to take the payment and bank can release it

    (this might be tricky with them being US though).

    This has happened with me when i have booked Train Tickets online and the hold has been 5 working days.
