I am not sure if I am in a right section but please help me with Virgin Active canclled contract.

I joined Virgin Active Wood Green branch in 2009. I had a month to month contract but due to losing my job I was unable to continue. When in March 2009 I notified the gym personnel about my current situation I was advised to writte a letter of cancellation. I cancelled my membership in person and I wrote resignation letter while I was there.

Two weeks ago I received a payment of £18.44 from Virgin Active and I called the customer service immediately. I had been informed that Virgin Active Wood Green branch is closed now and this is compensation. They also confirmed that I am still a gym member! I had explained that my membership has been cancelled in March 2009 but she asked me to check my bank statements. To my surprise she was right, for more than two years I have been charged £49 and then £51.00 every month without my knowledge or will!

I have already sent a complaint letter to the Head Office and I have been offered 50% refund. Unfortunattely I have lost a blue copy and I don't have any written proof of cancellation. I think this is not unacceptable and I want a full refund. The girl from customer service has confirmed that my last activity was in March 2009! Why do I have to pay for the service I did not use?!

I made an indemnity claim through my bank to get my money back. Now they have sent me the letter that my account is in arreas and I have to settle my bill asap.

Please advise me what to do. What do I need to do end this nightmare?!

Many thanks for your help.
