Been paid after leaving employment

I'm just posting to find out where I stand with this- obviously I know I have to tell my former employer about it and pay it back.

I get paid a monthly salary (not in arrears), so I get paid on the 26th of each month for that month's work. My contract for my last job ended on the 30th June and I was paid on the 26th June- which I expected to be my final pay. I checked my online banking today and was very surprised to see that my employer had paid me (a full month's salary) so I am assuming that someone in payroll has forgotten to stop my pay (which surprises me as I was only on a 10 month fixd term contract that was never going to be extended).

I am going to ring my former employer tomorrow (I am getting the payroll contact details off someone tonight), but just wanted to know what the process is for giving the money back, and also how they are going to correct my paid tax, student loan, pension etc. Do they have to give me a certain amount of notice to give it back? Obviously I've not spent it but I am keen to keep it offsetting my mortgage for as long as possible!

Had you taken all your accrued holiday or could some of the money be payment for untaken leave?

I would not phone but write (or possibly email) so there is a record of what is said.

Initially I would simply say that you would like a detailed breakdown of their calculations.

As you say, any overpayment will have to be paid back but you want to be certain this is the right amount.

A combination of second class stamps and the holiday season can slow things down to a crawl!

    Xmas Saver!
Have you had any paper work - payslips, p45 etc?

You may well be owed holiday etc.

Also what day of the month did you start, that might affect it.

No there shouldn't be anything owed (and the amount paid was a full month's salary so I'm guessing there's been a glitch in the efficiency that is NHS payroll...). I had taken all my holiday. I will email them tomorrow.

I like your thinking re: stamps and holiday season...

I am assuming that my manager has my payslip (it usually goes to her and then I pick it up from her secretary- I will email him to ask if it can be posted to me). I haven't had my p45 yet and was just thinking last week that I needed to ring/email to chase that up.

I'm pretty sure there's no holiday- my allowance April-June was only 6 days and I made sure to take them!

I started on the 13th September, but that month my pay was reduced accordingly (i.e. I got paid on the 26th Sept for 13th-30th Sept).

I've just been reading the other thread about someone being paid in a similar situation https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3390696 (although complicated by the employer being the bank) and there's discussion there about whether the employer can recall the salary. Does anyone know what the chances are of this happening in my case? The money is no longer in my current account (I put it to one side so the temptation isn't there!) so it would push me over my overdraft if taken back without warning (although I am not overly worried about this as my bank charges fees at the end of the day so as long as I check regularly I'd be able to transfer money over).

There is no update on my employer- I have emailed the person responsible for my payroll and copied in the overall payroll manager and received no response. My ex-manager has been on leave until today, but I have emailed her too to let her know what's going on and so far it's radio silence!

I would very much doubt they could recall this from your account without telling you.

One thought, are you actually making enough in interest to make this all worth the hassle?

If it were in an account that offset a mortgage or it was reducing an overdraft that was costing a lot in interest then maybe.

However, if it is simply earning a couple of percent in a standard "savings" account for a month or so the return will hardly buy a cup of coffee!

I highly doubt they'll recall it like in the other thread (which is a bit of a complex story).

Uncertain - she's offsetting her mortgage with it (last line of post one) so it's definitely worth moving it, even for a month!

    !

When it happened to me I got a letter from the bank advising that the employer had paid me incorrectly and that the money would be taken out on **/**/**** to make me aware of it and so i had the money available.

Thanks for the replies-tbh I would happily give it back tomorrow if they asked for it and I was assured that my tax/pension/student loan had all been amended and that I was issued a correct p45. Until then it can sit and offset :) If I haven't heard from them by the end of the week I will try and contact them again.

I started my job on the 17th of the month (I think) and was paid a full month's salary on the 28th (regular payday.)
