    Mortgage-free Glee!
You need to speak to your line manager -there may not be a vacancy lower down - particularly in the light of recuitment holds at the moment. I was a Lead Nurse - old I grade (Clinical lead in a Nurse-led service and also had full managerial responsibility), and was contracted for a 37 hrs per week, although the owrding in the contract was something to the effect of 'work the amount of hours necessary to fulfill the responsiilities of the post - talk about how long is a piece of string? Really I was doing the job of 2 people i.e. clinical manager and operational manager - and in the end decided that I had to get out - and so I transfered to another trust and got a Clinical Project Managers post - mkore money, purely managerial and no 24 hr responsibility. You need to weigh up what you want, and then take steps accordingly, but there is no way that your current situation is sustainable. Stick to your guns re- the contracted hours, and it will soon be evident to your line manager that you can't possible cover the amount of work they are exptecting from you, considering that you wwill not get overtime payment. Also you need to join a union - I would have thought that you would be in one particulalry in the light of being a clinician.

Well I spoke to my line manager today and they were very understanding (I almost blubbed :embarasse but managed to keep it together). I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. Before putting anything in writing i am going to speak to my line manager's manager sometime this week and we will see what ensues.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
