How to clean overflow bit on the bath?

I have noticed its smelling a little, I have used a plug unblocker in the bath and not much has happened to be honest. I think its actually coming from the overflow bit, you know the bit with all the holes in that the plug dangles from:). I have tried to pour some bleach down it but it usually just comes back out again.
Anyone got any ideas, please!

A strong thick gloopy solution of soda crystals poured into the overflow though an old funnel? Just enough water to make the crystals more easily poured - or just straight soda crystals using the funnel

Some pound shops have snake drain unblockers with Velcro at the end, I've got a very narrow one of those. That might do the trick
If liquids like bleach - and presumably soda are coming out again try some cotton wool buds as well, dipped in bleach. You may be able to hook out some goop and the bleach will help clean, even if it's only a few drops going down.
