THE TRIP
You and your guest will experience a myriad of exciting destinations as you journey along the southern and western coastlines of Borneo. From isolated tropical islands to diverse national parks, this cruise will showcase some of Borneo’s most beautiful landscapes.
Camp Leakey in Tanjung Puting National Park is a highlight, with its abundant wildlife, including the bizarre-looking proboscis monkey and over 220 bird species, such as hornbills, deep-forest birds and wetland birds. Guests will also have the opportunity to witness the rehabilitation of orphaned orangutans in the park.
Orion II will visit Gunung Palung National Park and Bako National Park to examine first-hand the complexity of ecosystems that once covered the entire Island. These two parks provide a refuge for Borneo’s 15,000 plant species, 222 mammal species, 420 bird species, and numerous reptile, amphibian and fish species.
Bako National Park is home to rainforests, jungle streams, waterfalls, a variety of wildlife and plant life, secluded beaches and trekking trails. Very few places in the world pack so much natural beauty into such a limited area. Bako is one of the most rewarding parks in Sarawak for wildlife and, being a protected park since 1957, the animals are not as wary of humans as you might find elsewhere.
Gunung Palung National Park is notable for its variety of wildlife and its diversity of habitat types, ranging from mangrove and freshwater swamp forest, to lowland alluvial forest and mountain forest. It is one of only a handful of parks in the world where orangutans can be seen in the wild. It is believed that orangutans at Gunung Palung constitute one of the densest and largest populations on Borneo. A census conducted in 2001 gives an estimate of 2,500 individuals, about 17 per cent of the estimated population in Borneo and close to 10 per cent of the world’s population.
The Orion II offers excellent facilities and accommodates just 100 guests in 50 suites, each of which affords ocean views and is appointed with a sitting area or separate living room and twin or queen-size beds. Decorated with rich fabrics, rare antiquities and fine works of art, the ship’s public spaces are warm and inviting.
