It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Wow, thanks Clare!
Really, it was just the veg from the garden...even tatties, if possible, and things like soup and stews if it's possible to bottle them, as I said we get power cuts here in winter and I dread losing all that hard won food."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -

Squeaky, I am totally in awe but should have known that this site would have a separate "leek and turnip" thread for when I needed it :rotfl::rotfl:
Red Doe, I'm in the same boat. My nearest shop is 7 miles one way and 11 the other way & we get lots of powercuts too. You can't depend solely on a freezer, so I'd also be interested in pressure cooker canning (wouldnt like to say that after a few) .0 -

Lousy weather in Manchester, goes with the mood of the city I guess. Dd's OH has been sent home early from work, they locked the restaurant at 4. Last night the manager was celebrating his wedding there and they had to lock themselves in as a gang had formed outside. One of the guests was 9 months pregnant and very scared. They had to wait and leave very quickly as soon as they could.
Went to feed the guinea pigs and rabbit this morning and there was a tiny field mouse trapped in the feed bin. I was wandering round the house muttering that I needed a ladder to get the mouse out, OH thought I was going to go on the roof to fix the gutter. Was quite amused, let us say, that I wanted to make a ladder so the mouse could climb out of the feed bin - well I couldn't pick it up cos it was jumping up. Have to say I was in 2 minds as its probably one of the family thats eating my seeds out of the ground and nibbling my fruit and vegClearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.

Good to hear. Furry beast sulking as there is no way I'm taking him out in this. Burn is overflowing at the school round the corner. Been planning for winter so have salt etc. but no sandbags. Hmmmm.GC Mar 13 £47.36/£1500 -
What I really really need is some wellies for the hens. They're moaning about the nail varnish on their toes coming off.0
