Well in theory I think you shouldn't re-use oil that has been used for frying - but try telling your average Spaniard or Italian that! I use EVOO, walnut oil and toasted sesame oil - all sparingly because of the cost - and would consider using them again as doing so does not seem to have affected the med yet :rotfl:

Walnut oil is good in a salad dressing, especially if you add walnuts to the salad as well.

When I lived in Spain my landlady used refined olive oil for frying simply because it was cheaper than EVOO, not for any other reason. I think the issue with using olive oil to fry is the smoke point - ie it smokes at a relatively low temperature.

Just popping in before I go off to my body attack class - will have to come back later to catch up on all the posts. I see SammyKaye has posted photos - so pleased I'm very nosy.

I haven't been back since my boiler saga - the engineers report has gone off to the Insurance company and we will see what happens next. I suspect it will end up in an Ombudsman case but either way we will have to foot the bill for a new boiler in the meantime which looks like being around £3500:eek:

I phoned lots of museum type places about Granny's sewing machine , only one said they would phone me back (and haven't), one woman said she had dozens of phone calls a day from people trying to offload their junk - charming! Looks like I'm stuck with it meantime.

Another Asda smart price item has gone from my weekly shop due to ridiculous price increases - Mozarella cheese - was 47p last week now 54p. It's getting utterly soul destroying shopping now - I point blank refuse to buy things that have gone up by that percentage.

Anyway, better go or I'll be late and I'd hate to be harassed and sweaty at the start of my class - plenty time for that at the end:):) Hubby says I'm no advert for exercise with a face like an over-ripe tomato after 5 minutes. I'm a great believer in "no pain, no gain" - those who aren't sweating buckets and looking like they've gone through a hedge backwards simply aren't trying!!

Making my way backwards through the posts - Taurusgb - take it easy and get well soon.

Well I use it for sauteing things all the time - and the answer is "I think so AFAIK". Its the only oil I normally have in - though, at the moment, I'm still planning on getting round to a bottle of walnut oil I got in after having read its nice drizzled on top of something like lentil soup. Must use it...must...as it was RATHER expensive.

As for the half mug worth I have from yesterday - its sitting in the fridge whilst I try and recall whether I read something somewheres about one shouldnt re-use fat or oil that has already been used for sauteing/frying in (something to do with chemical reactions - and was it something along the lines of something to do with antioxidants or something????). Dunno - any chemists around who can tell me whether its safe to re-use it for cooking something else with (whether it having transformed in a way that wouldnt be healthy for me)??

    ********************

...and speaking of experiments - must get my act together as to what to do with tayberries. Thats today's "food I havent tried yet" experiment - I'm now aiming for several new to me foods per week. Dont ask why - but its that policy of mine of "Must try everything (vegetarian) at least once"..
Tayberry vinegar is a great salad dressing.

    Hi all..
    Taurusgb..big hugs hun..hope you get better soon..:grouphug:
Well i have had an eventful few days..firstly i think our new neighbours have settled in really well..well the sofa in the front garden is a giveaway..secondly i am learning an entire new language..peppered with obscenities..thirdly i think i am far too soft on my children judging by the way the new neighbours treat and talk to their children, fourthly i may be a wanted person with my local police force...i mean can you actually get into trouble for being sarcastic to a copper...hope not or i am in trouble:D..my brother who is also a copper found it absolutely hilarious and reckons not but i don't know..he was a big un..and didn't like my responses..tough,:p..
Anyway back to topic...i have been sitting in the sun knitting winter scarves:D..was going to do some jam but its too flipping hot to do much.
Been to the lotties and checked everything..all growing away nicely, lots of courgettes, spring onions..o yes i have 1 yes 1 red tomato..put the flags out..finally..hope its a sign of things to come..got lots of green ones, fingers crossed they red up a bit.
My pumpkin is growing nicely,so are the squashes..love butternut squash..had to buy some proper veg storage bags to keep our crop of spuds and carrots in..also the onions look like they are going to do well...hope so..
Went to wilkos and got a spade for £3.50..it should have been £13.50..bargain..its a stainless steel and ideal for me as its not to heavy..makes me wonder if they an sell it at that price now why couldn't they to start with..
Have to ask a quickie question..is it right that if you whip double cream to a nice thickness you can then freeze it????..
Right o i'm off to put chickens to bed and make hubby a cuppa..
    love to you all
    ftm

Taurus - that sounds awful - best of luck

Flowertotmum - I've read that about the whipped cream on here too

Dee5565/scottishminnie - bought some value free range eggs from Mr M today. As usual reached into the back of the pallet thingy to get the youngest ones - at the front 10 eggs were £1-33, at the back they were £1-65 - that's a 24% price hike in one go  Their value mayo has just jumped from 38p to 48p - that's 26% - and value peanuts have just disappeared. Thank goodness I decided last year to grow a lot of my own stuff and that I like veggie stuff just as much as meat/fish.

Hugh F-W made a pesto last week that would be cheaper than the standard version - he used toasted breadcrumbs and parsley instead of pinenuts and basil. It was a programme on bread and was very good. I've got loads of basil now so might try his version but with breadcrumbs and basil.

It topped 28C here today - the dog usually sleeps in the living room from 7-30pm but she's still by the open back door enjoying the lower temperature. Might not be a lot of sleeping here tonight :o

Right off for a shower, its been sooooooooooo darn humid here again today.

    Take care everyone x

Taurus; "Well I've been languishing in a hospital bed since being rushed in with an agonizing pain in my left side on Saturday morning. Pain is due to a hugely enlarged spleen but so far they can't say why. Blood is all wrong too - not clotting for one thing apparantly. I've been very lucky tho as am in a single bed side ward with en suite facilities"

That sounds pretty horrible, hope it's sorted out quickly.

Mardatha; What about dunking the grey nets into a solution of bleach. That's how I used to do mine. Might work before you buy anything.

Award ceremony day today. Without factoring "friends", it *could* have been a frugal day. However, due to the "occasion", plus time-demands past/present, we were invited to have a pre-ceremony luncheon with fellow attendee's. Their choice of location; haven't seen them for a very long time so an personal (and financial) commitment. Bluntly, it was a costly affair - despite a "buffet" being on offer at the ceremony later in the day.

I restrained the urge to "doggy bag" the left over sandwiches at the end of the ceremonial buffet - well, there has to be a line drawn somewhere and that just seemed a step OS too far (as honoured guests ;) ).

How come, attending award ceremonies proves so expensive? E.G. you have to have a certain "dress code" (which includes all family attendees), you have the travel expenses; while the event is a great honour, it blooming well costs!

Been reading the thread avidly using my phone - not too sure how well posting from it will turn out so apologies if it's hard to read.
Have no idea how much OS is going on at home.....not much is my guess!
Don't fret on the OS'ing on the home front, your health is vastly more important!!!! I have two hopes for you: one, that the pain can be managed so you have some relief; secondly, they find the cause and can deal with it! Get Well Very Soon!!!

(How very "old style" that you are still finding a positive, despite your pain and uncertainty: inspirational!)

Without meaning to come across in a negative way, or cause any offense, you *could* find a way to pass the time and focus away from the pain by "planning" how your family could continue to OS in your absence? That way, you still have some input into keeping food/fuel bills within your pre-hospitalisation regime. Plus, I am quite sure they are floundering without your insight and management on the homefront ;) However, to be fair, that really isn't the top priority right now (thank goodness for our NHS! = financially, not an added burden to worry over). Focus, predominantly, on getting well; the home front can be rectfied when you are feeling stronger!
