A lot of supermarkets are closed on New Years Day. Supermarkets are notorious for over ordering during the festive period so some stores will have massive overstocks that they may sell to you at cheap prices.
Any supermarket that is closed on New Years Day will need to get rid of stock that is dated the 31st Dec or the 1st Jan. So depending where you shop you may pick up a real bargain. Some stores may even give out free food. I got a free bunch of grapes when I went shopping on Christmas eve from Sainsburys. Lovely they were too, normal price about £3. They had loads of fruit and veg at knock down prices.
Not sure if it is worth making a special trip shopping for but if you live near a supermarket that you normally get decent reduced food from then it may be worth your while.
Don't forget that lots of things can be frozen so if you have the freezer space then now is the time to stock up.
Items that will be going cheap are probably:
Bread
Cake
Milk
Cheese
Meat
Fruit
Veg
Party food and nibbles-have a good look at these as they have been on offer in all of the major supermarkets so get a few of these on reduced and they may well pay you to take them away once their multisaves kick in.:j
Also anything else they may have over ordered on in general such as various refridgerated condiments and large desserts etc.
If you do go then please post and let others know what you got and the price so that they can decide if its worth going to their local shop.:T

I was in my local Asda, Chandlers Ford, 15 mins before close and they reduced their bananas down from 0.83 k/g to only 0.10 k/g - people were walking out with boxes full, at a minimum weight of 16 k/g a box, came to only £1.60!
I'll be handing out bananas to our neighbours tomorrow - a New Year offering if you will.0
