Bit of a long story, but in the late 90s till about 2001, my ex wife and I got ourselves into a fair bit of debt (17k without interest) with credit cards and one loan.
In November of 2001, I was offered a job in Poland and we moved away. I admit we made no attempt to contact the creditors to inform them we were leaving as at the time it seemed like an answer to our problems.
In 2003, my Wife returned to the UK and we divorced, she has since passed away (2010).
I returned to the UK in August 2008 and started working and paying taxes here.
Last week I received a letter at my first address in the UK since my return (haven't lived there 2 years) asking me to contact a company concerning an "investigation". Was subsequently told, by phone, they were working for a debt recovery company and that I would be receiving the "invoice" in the post. They told me by phone the sum totalled 17k.
They informed me that they had been trying to contact me previously but they have had no contact with myself or my ex wife up until now. I have never received any documentation previously.
My question is, Where do I stand with this situation? Is this situation classed as Statute Barred? What can I expect them to do next? Will any resulting action have an effect on my credit rating (since returning I have managed my finances and am in control)?
Im not proud of my previous actions, but am praying there is a way to resolve this.
Any advice from fellow "sufferers" would be fantastic.

If you have not paid this debt within six years, it is a statute barred debt. Therefore you need to write them a letter the extent of telling them you this and you refuse to pay.
If you have paid, then you need to send a prove it letter, ask them to prove you owe the debt.
I think you will find, if the story is as you say it is, then they are clutching at straws trying to get you to pay.29th June -Beginning Credit Score 422
£2575
12th July - Credit score 471
22nd August - Credit Score 550
Still very poor just but only just!
Remaining to pay off: £1370.950
