Quick Crochet question

I'm thinking of 'having a go' at crochet and have found a pattern that I'd like to try. It says that I need a 'size 7' hook.
I'm assuming that it doesn't mean mm's as the 'knit' is quite tight on this item - any tips on what it to look for? I also tried looking on the 'lion brand' website that I posted a link to - but it doesn't seem to list a size 7:confused:
Hope someone can help,

    Hi Kaz

    Check this link http://www.cpu-enterprises.com/tips1.htm

    Hope it helps!

I always get confused with so many different needles and hooks measurements!

    Thank you both!
I had a look at both sites - the first said that a size 7 was 4.5mm, the second 1.65mm. I'm sure that it's an american size 7 as the pattern is from an American site. What would you recomend for a moderately tight weave? (eg if i was making a crochet doll and it had to keep in plastic beads or similar?)

What yarn are you using? I would say the 4.5mm as 1.65mm is unfeasibly small. If you were using a standard weight wool (DK, aran etc) I'd say 4.5mm would be plenty small enough. If it seemed too loose you could always start again with a smaller hook.

It depends on the yarn you are using - if 4-ply you should prob. use 2 or 2.5 mm or so. If using DK, a 4 mm hook is what I'd use.

If you have odds and ends of wool and no label, you can just do a sample with the smallest hook you have and then try again if too tight.

    Good luck!

The pattern recomended crochet cotton - but all I found in this was white and cream.... I guess that would've been my next question, lol.
Thanks for your help everyone..... any idea on the wool and best places to buy online? (small starter order - I'm guessing it's cheaper to order online & Pay post than to drive to town as I don't tend to go there)

Hi Aycor, yes I did but there's no contact method on it whatsoever. Shame really as I would've liked to thank them for providing the patterns etc for free.

If they meant the smaller size it should say that it is a steel hook which would be suitable for thread crochet. Also if it is an american pattern then the stitches are named diferently - e.g. sc is the same as our dc - is there a link to the pattern or could you take a picture of it so we can help you
    :)
