I have a full pack of tomatoes that are getting past their best. There are 6 in it. Can I use these the same as tinned toms? I know this may be a daft question but I am just discovering the joys of cooking. xx

Yes you can. Why don't you puree them, I just cut out the top core, slice in half and cook in the microwave until they re mushy - then I fish out the skins (hate them). You can use it in cooking e.g.bolognaise, pizza toppings. We also like it with grilled bacon. It wll also freeze well.0

Yep,I'd imagine you could use the same as tinned toms - but if you want to take off the skins score a small cross in the skin at the top of each tom & place in a bowl. Cover with boiling water and then count to about 10. Drain, and when cooled enough to handle the skin should peel away easily.

Or chop in smallish bits and fry with onions in a bit of oil - then whizz in a blender, you won't notice the skins once they are cooked and blended, and you save yourself the scalded fingers!
Add a pinch of salt and herbs and you have the perfect pasta sauce!
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
if you have a bit of left over cream and half an onion you could make a lovely cream of tomato soup, nothing like the tinned variety! eat it now or freeze it fot later.Member 1145 Sealed Pot Challenge No4

If you've already got the oven on for something else you could halve them, sprinkle with salt, pepper and a herb of your choice (I use rosemary). Add some olive oil (or whatever you've got to hand) and bake in the oven - they take around 15-20 mins, but this depends on oven temp, so could take longer. Best to keep an eye on them!
Great with just about anything, and good in pasta sauces, sandwiches, etc, etc...0 -
Roasted tomatoes are yummy. Do mine like Ishtar but sometimes the toms can be a little tart so I sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar over the top. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.:kisses3:0

My Dad chops them and cooks in frying pan with a little sugar and balsamic vinegar, don't know exact amounts but yummy especially on crusty bread or over rice. One day I might be more organised...........

if you don't want to cook them now you could freeze them and then use them later in soups
