Could you describe it then maybe we can recreate it? Taste, texture, colour, shape? Is it white or wholegrain? Herbs? Lumps of onion?

Never been to a Miller & carter restaurant, but used to have onion loaf in the Chicago Rib Shack back in the 80's - and I think it was made like this: - http://meemoskitchen.blogspot.com/2008/08/tony-romas-onion-loaf.html#axzz1T3CeMmho

    Yummy but very very BAD!

Most commercial onion breads are made with the dried (cooked) onion - you get a good flavour without getting the moisture. That's a good place to start, take a basic loaf mix and add the onions and go from there, adding other flavourings as necessary.

I think OP means the deep fried onion thing found in american diners - Onion Loaf as opposed to Onion Bread (which is equally delicious and much better for you!)

Yes it is the deliciously bad for you "battered" type of Onion Loaf! It's like deep fried onion rings in a loaf shape but we tried to make it like that yesterday and ended up with battered onion Yorkshire pud cakes - very nice but just not the same.:(

Thanks to everyone for their interest.

    My husband says "Thanks"!

This sounds exactly like what he's craving. Dinner tomorrow night will be Onion Loaf and something vaguely healthy to offset the deep fried calories :o.

    Grateful thanks from us both.

Your are welcome! Hope it turns out ok. You might like these too, never tried to make them but a similar concept.
