European Health Insurance Card

My son and his girlfriend recently applied for one of these cards. They have now arrived but are only valid until next March.

Why might this be? Mine is valid for five years!

Thanks for any help.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Cannot see how...our EHIC include cards for an 8 month baby, 4 yr old, 6yr old and a 14 yr old.

But maybe the person who applied has paid enough?

On the website it only says you must be UK resident to get them, but it also says they are valid for UP TO five years (suggesting that some may be for a shorter time).

I wonder what makes the difference?

Would love to know, but my son won't bother asking as he not interested as long as he has them, and will renew then whn the time comes.

I cannot understand why there is not much time on their cards....on the website it states they last from 3 - 5 years. They did not get them from that website where they had to pay, did they...as it's a right rip off !

As you the say the main thing is they have the cards in time for their holidays !

If they applied through an "agency" who claim to do the work for you for a fee then, maybe there is a way for them to apply on your behalf so that they are issued for only a short period. This would mean that, next year, they would need to re-apply and if they did it through the same agency there would be another fee to pay.

They need to apply directly themselves, either through the government web site or the post office - there is no charge if you fill the very simple form in yourself.

They applied (afaik) through the official site. They did not pay anything.
