Personal details over the phone

I got a phone call the other day from HSBC. They rang my mobile and said they were doing a customer satisfaction survey about their internet banking service. Well, ok, I'm happy to have my two penn'th worth....
Then they asked me to confirm my name and date of birth...being suspicious by nature I replied that I don't give my personal details out to strange people who cold call me. The member of staff reassured me that they were working for HSBC and that they needed to confirm who they were talking but I still refused.
I emailed HSBC to ask them why they were encouraging people to give out personal details to unconfirmed callers over the phone - and I had a reply that basically said it WAS a call that originated from HSBC and that they take security very seriously.
In this day and age of sophisticated phishing scams it seems irresponsible of banks to legitimise giving out personal information to random callers.
Is it just me? Am I making a big fuss about nothing?

It's not just you I do this too, I trust no one and nothing. I also think that sometimes the banks reaction is a little silly when they have reminders in there banks and online about how they would never email so never give any details to any emails, then they go and phone you and expect you to provide the information. Weird.
I usually just tell them to write to me as I am unable to confirm any details until they can prove who they are. Seem's to work for me0 -
We were once scammed by someone claiming to be from the Halifax. thankfully we didn't give out our details and have always refused to do so since. Whenever I mention to the caller that I am not prepared to give out my details, but will call them back on the number I have on my statement/card they are fine about it. In fact Halifax have said that it is absolutely the right thing to do!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. If it's the right thing to do, why do they ask you for your details over the phone in the first place! Doesn't make sense to me! :rolleyes:0 -
