I am looking to buy a new desktop computer and found this one at Amazon which looks good value for money - a big reduction from the original price.

I only want it for basic home computing and internet use.

Any good????????

Many thanks.

It is future proof so would last for some time, Just noticed but in the title it says HDD 500GB but the tech specs say Hard Drive: 1 x 320 GB

    Hello closed,

Yes it is on its last legs.

Despite having taken it back to factory settings a few months ago (thanks to your good advice) it is now yet again limping along at a very very slow pace.

It really is time to upgrade to something with far more RAM.

Are Acer's good or a load of rubbish?

software bloat or infections make them go slow, very rarely a hardware problem, and very rarely on last legs.

post your physical ram total and commit charge and peak commit charge from task manager/performance tab and a hijackthis log

physical ram was 512 I think?

    It says RAM is 504

    Commit chage (K)
    Total 549376
    Peak 720300

It shouldn't be infected, I always buy Kaspersky anti virus software, which is supposed to offer good protection. Nothing shows up on scans.

CPU is whirring constantly as if it is struggling to cope.

What do you think of the Acer?

I'm a big fan of desktop computers and I build my own. If your old one is about 7 years old or newer then it can be upgraded for less than the price of a new Acer. You only carry out basic computing anyway so why pay for what you don't need? The Acer like most PC's now are built from the cheapest components to maximise company profits. I have pulled apart some of these cheaper 'small form factor' machines and I haven't been impressed at what's inside. The 220 watt power supply will be working quite hard too. Still, it will be guaranteed so that's in it's favour. As others have mentioned, it sounds like your old machine needs it's pipes cleaning and will then go on for a while longer.
When anyone asks me about their machine I look at the spec by downloading SIW a free programme telling you what's inside. It will tell you how much RAM you have and the type of processor and much more. I then go to the crucial website, download their programme and it will tell me if I can add any more memory. There are other things to take into account too but it will help you to make up your mind about getting a new machine or not.

Can I suggest you check Dell Outlet if you are after a new PC, melbury? You often get some very nice deals on there, but you do have to be a bit lucky (and quick) sometimes. Some of the ones currently listed on there are cheaper than your amazon one. You'd have to buy your own monitor, but you'd have in the region of £150 to do that and should be able to get a better one than the one at Amazon.

From what I have read Acer's don't seem to be very well looked upon.

    Does this seem better?

To be honest, if you're intent on getting another PC then buy locally as the carriage will have to be paid for after 30 days if warranty work is needed - and these desktops are heavy! This PC is no better and no worse than a machine built from parts by a competent computer builder.
