    ^what pmduk said. Although there are blood tests available that can distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, these won't normally be done on diagnosis unless there is a question over what type.

    OP just go to your nearest large chemist, they tend to have one blood glucose meter or another on offer usually. Expect to pay £10 or so for one that is on sale. Even if you do get one from your doctor later, it is useful to have a spare in case you lose one.
