I have recieved a letter from this company chasing a Debt against a person who has not lived at this address for at least 5 Years. I can only assume they are a previous owner (I hope, Not a identity theft)
I have had a scan of the previous comprehensive thread where it advises people who are effected directly and are named in the letters,
However what do you do if you are the not the person in question but live at the same address, could the credit worthiness be effected of my address?
By phoning these people up can they somehow claim we are liable.
Also not very keen on sharing any details with these people unless I have too.
However is not responding at all an option?
Can you please advise.
Thanks

Was the letter addressed to you in name?
Or was it in the name of the previous occupant?
I presume the latter from your post, but have to check.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Write on the letter not known at this address return to sender , put it back in the post box , DO NOT PHONE THEM , you can not be held responsible for another persons debts ,Saumrai_Jack wrote: »I have recieved a letter from this company chasing a Debt against a person who has not lived at this address for at least 5 Years. Thanks for coming back on this post Fermi and Wrinkles,
The letter is definately for the attention to another person, However the address is my current address.
The worrying thing is that the actual letter gives instructions if you are not the person who this is addressed to.
I am keen to seek as much advice before I take an action, I am pretty certain that these charachters will probably start sending more letters if I send one back that the person does not live at this address, however more then willing to give it a try.0 -
We had to deal with a lot of this when we first moved in.
You can send back the letters but in my experience that doesn't work. The easiest way is to just phone them up and tell them that the person they are looking for hasn't lived there for at least 5 years. Don't tell them who you are (nothing to do with them!) but once you've told them then that should be the end of it. At least until another DCA buys the debt of course.
Or you can just bin the letter - to be honest, if the person hasn't lived there in 5 years it's very likely that this DCA is on a fishing trip trying to find their man/woman.
We went through all of this and after a while it stemmed the tide! Nowadays we just get the odd one every few months, which we normally ignore unless we start to get a few again.0
