Application question clarification

I'm currently completing a job application, but just want clarification on one question. It is "Please provide an example of how you have a) successfully worked as part of a team and b) worked on your own to complete a particular task."

Am I right in thinking this is one task where I have both worked in a team and individually?

    I agree, two.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • That's how I'd take the question to mean, too.

I read it both ways, so just wanted other opinions. If anyone else has an opinion please share it.

I have another nineteen questions of a similar nature to answer first (this must be a way of weeding applicants!) so I'll be coming back to it.

If they wanted either they would say - hence it is two different activities

I don't think that the OP was questioning whether it was either but whether she'd worked in these ways on the same task.

    (Apologies if I've misunderstood.)

I think two separately as well.

Yes, it was whether it was on the same task. So in group work doing X, what happened (as a team) was Y and my individual part on this was Z.

So two separate tasks, one for team work and another for individual.

I agree it's badly worded...and the task could be within teamwork...however I'd have thought that if it was the same task then it wouldn't have an a) or a b)....so...

Please provide an example of how you have successfully worked as part of a team and worked on your own to complete a particular task.

The actual question they have asked could be split into:

a - Please provide an example of how you have successfully worked as part of a team

b - Please provide an example of how you have worked on your own to complete a particular task.

But by cutting out the repetition they have grouped it into the two part-er and not been explicit about their actual requirements.

    I would title it as:

'Working as part of a team' I regularly work as part of a team and usually take the role of x or y within the team. Most recently, my team delivered A and B within the timeframe allocated, and increased our quality marks by x% making it one of the highest performing projects our company has delivered. My personal contribution to the team was to FLANG, in which I managed to bring forward KERRANG and FLOM to the team, and took that technique forward to become a standard amongst the company's procedures.

'Working on my own'. I am well versed to lone working, on personal and team related targets and in 2009, I was given a large Thingy to work on, I had to work across 3 teams who were all delivering different targets and I had to DOODA their results and FLING my own targets, whilst meeting my manager's exacting requirements on accuracy and timescale. I set myself targets to ensure that I meet them, and I am an adept time manager and use various techniques to ensure that I deliver on time, to budget and of an excellent standard.

Thereby, showing teamwork AND lone working in both cases but also meeting the team and lone working requirements.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
