A Reformed Spender - My debt diary

Worked just over an hours overtime yesterday to try and make up for the loss of earnings in the last few weeks (temp work has pitfalls - todays paypacket is 40% less) and walked home only to get mugged  and they stole my ipod (in my bag) my phone and my oyster - I was feeling so ill in the morning I'd forgotten my purse and had a self imposed NSD. Lucky.

So I got in a police car after calling 999 and found the two guys who did on the streets - police chanse and then gave a statement until 11 last night and then this morning at 7.30 we had to go to the station to identify my property because the idiots went home and dumped my stuff that was worth cash value.
No idea where my bag is with my notebooks, my diary and my books (including my new Thrifty Ways by Moneysaving OS) Hopefully it'll turn up. Was really lucky I wasn't hurt and the police were amazing but I've lost a load of stuff and a days wage so now debt repayments this week. Better luck next week eh? :rolleyes:0 -

What scumbags. It really drives me insane that you work hard and struggle to spend as little as possible, and these low lifes think it's ok to come and threaten you for it. Hope you're ok.

oh god, I'm so glad you weren't hurt. Don't worry about the stuff, and well done for going to the police and hopefully helping them stop it happening to anyone else. Take care of your self - or get OH to spoil you to make up for it. Glad you're ok though as much as you can be after something like that.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 234 Proud to be dealing with my debts I love the Dave Ramsey podcasts. Tustastic wrote:Reformed, I'm so sorry you had your stuff pinched but so glad you're not hurt. I'm amazed you and the police managed to spot the people who did the mugging. One thing occurs to me - I did a free police-funded personal safety course last year and one of the trainers' top tips was not to use an iPod/MP3 in public, for two reasons. Firstly, it means you are not paying attention to your surroundings so not aware if someone is about to hit on you and secondly, idiots will mug you for it.
Hope you're feeling better now and that OH is in top sympathetic mode.:)
Thankyou for all your kind replies. I was really touched. Just to set the record straight I had my ipod in my bag - i took it out on the bus journey to listen to and just left it in my bag the rest of the day. Living in London I would never walk with it on and I wouldn't even use my mobile phone in public if I was walking along. I also keep my keys in my pocket seperately (so I wouldn't ever have to change the locks etc..) It was pretty mental that they had gone home with my valuable stuff, dumped it and gone back out again in the same clothes but I don't think they were particularly clever. I reckon they thought I looked an easy target with money because for the first time that week I was wearing a suit and heels (3 years old I'll have them know - reheeled shoes - and I'd just worked overtime at the charity I work for where I don't get paid particularly well for the type of job I do because its public sector...breathe.)
Even when I got in the unmarked car to drive around I wasn't convinced it would be anything but a waste of time. I said to the sargeant 'be honest, how many thieves do you actually find after something like this?' and he said 'you would be suprised the number of people we catch this way, most thieves are thick cowards' - what a prophet. They are in court today charged with robbery, they deny it, despite having my property, matching my description and me identifying them out of all the other youths on bikes riding round Hackney. Think its going to go on for a long time and I also thought I was alright about it but its put me on a bit of an edge to tell you the truth. Last night I felt what I think was a bit of a panic attack coming on after I heard the news I don't want to sound self indulgent but I was breathless and I can't describe it, just full of fear - not good. Ah well. In perspective it wasn't my worst experience - I'll get over it.
Otherwise I went to Tescos yesterday and spent about 50 quid for the week which is amazing - you can tell when I do the shopping! I had to go with a massive hairband on because I couldn't comb my hair - those idiots nicked my hairbrush as well!
Then I got very drunk and as a result had HUGE fight with OH. We've made up now but I was in the wrong and so I feel very sorry for myself. At least this morning I got some good news, a letter came through from the little boy I sponsor in Vietnam.:rotfl:0 -
Hey Reformed - are you going to get your ipod back? I lost mine when at home this Christmas (booo hooo) but I got a new 2gb one from the refurbished store on the apple site. Because the new model ipods are out the older version white and black ones seem to have some very good reductions.
Good luck with the debt challenge, I am in a similar position 2 and a bit years out of uni and 14,000 debt eek - we'll get there in the end!:A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -
Another Hackney dweller out there, nice to meet you! I live near to Finsbury Park and Clissold Park.
I was bloody sad to hear that your stuff was stolen  - it happened to me about three years ago. My bag was found in a bin missing my phone, cash, cards, umbrella and lip gloss :rotfl:
I hope that your week has started to get better. I have just worked out that I spend £100 on travel in London each month - and that's WITH an oyster and season tickets! I hope you haven't had any similar nasty surprises...
Good luck

Well I will get my ipod and my phone back at some stage. I've proved its mine but it's now 'evidence' so don't know when I'll get it back. I would really like to find my bag with the other stuff I can't replace, notebooks etc... OH and I went looking in bins but... nothing. Makes me mad.
Good luck with paying off your debts LaraHoust, you seem to be ticking them off quite a bit! I can wait to reduce my numbers a bit soon, not been able to pay anything off for a while. Nice OH had actually forgotten about our long term loan arrangement. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything! Ha ha! I've worked out I can pay it off in November and hopefully the student loan I can chuck some money at soon.
MoneyBunny, I feel the pain of the missing lip glosses etc... I was getting ready last night and realising item by item I was missing my foundation, compact and blusher. Tragedy. Going to have to go without as am so skint. I got a really neat designer umbrella for Christmas and that's gone as well
I can't believe that your oyster costs that much, but I guess if you travel before 9 and use the train, tube and bus that's the going rate at the moment. I was getting the bus - just the one - by walking out of my way, but I worked out it saved me so much money I couldn't not, now I have to avoid that route for at least a month. What's worse is I hate the tube, I actually don't mind the bus but the tube is horrifying. They should pay US to travel on it. We are the ones keeping the economy thriving!
Thanks for everyone's support.0 -
I had an NSD yesterday because OH took me to the cinema on a 'date' :T We watched Apocalypto which was ace although a bit gruesome. Today I spent £35.10 on £49.00 worth of stuff from Body Shop. The girl told me to spend in two transactions and then not only did I get my 10% love your body discount but I got my free £10.00 'gift' i.e my mascara:j
Had to replace all that stuff that got nicked. Felt I deserved the treat but I can't really afford it ..... What to do? Should really have shown a bit more resolve but I'm not really up for not going in wearing make up!! Ha ha.
Did an hour and a halfs overtime today out of pure neccessity - I am so busy. They keep talking about employing someone more permanent in my role. I think that I'd be kept on if I applied but I don't know what to do. I'm not sure that I want to stay and try and get another job but I feel so underqualified. Feeling a bit lost to say the least.
NSD for me tomorrow. Need to start looking at my options for earning more money. Wish me luck.0 -
Tustastic wrote:I'm a born and bred North Londoner and even I reached the end of my tether with the tube after several decades commuting to central London. You're right, Reformed, we should be paid to travel on those subterranean cattle trucks. Though oddly enough the suburban London train system is the place to go for shoving and shouting to get on in the morning rush hour.
I have heard as such. I spoke with a girl at work and she said she has never managed to get a seat ever from Essex to Kings Cross. So unfair!! Ah well, needs must and that. Can't get out of working. Ha ha. Going to get my sewing machine this week (my belated Birthday/Christmas present) got it special offer and after quidco and mastercard cashback I got a very good deal. I hope to make things. What yet I have no idea as I haven't used one before! Need to make that 1007 for the olympic challenge. 68p on quidco clickthroughs so far ain't doing all that for the total and I can't claim my cashback for something I bought... against the rules.0
