declined a joint bank account

Hi, Im not sure exactly which forum to post this one so please move if ive got it wrong ..

The story is that my partner moved in to my house 2 years ago now - mortgage in my sole name still.

We each have our own bank accounts and I have a credit card in my name with him as an added card holder.

We are getting married later this year and want to have a joint account that we pay an equal amount into for paying our bills. My partner pays half of every bill including the mortgage and overpayments of the mortgage.

At the moment my partner has a dd to my account where all the bills come from as that is how it was set up when i moved into the house as a single person 6 years ago.

2 days ago we applied to First Direct for a joint account ( im with FD) and got a letter of decline today.

My partner has been on experian and checked his credit as he had a lot of financial problems when he got divorced. I'll come to that bit later.

So experian shows him as having a credit score of 999 and excellent. It shows him as having number of credit accounts as 6 (mobile, phone, bank account, gas, electric) of which show as settled and the other 4 all show satisfactory.
It shows him as having amount of credit available as £0, amount of os debt as £30 which when you go into the report is the monthly dd to British Gas so unsure why it shows as o/s?
It shows him as being resident at our house since April 2009, but with linked adresses as being 33 - going into that report it is links from this house to his previous residence (rented property in his sole name), his sisters property (he lived there for a couple of months) another rented property in his sole name and his previosu house which was a joint mortgage with his ex wife.
The joint house was re-possesed in 2006 but there is no money owing on it and all other debts associated ie council tax were all cleared.

After his divorce/ house re-possession he handed his cards back into santander (at their request) and was left with a basic cash point use only card. When he was last in the bank sorting out an ISA the girl went through finances with him and he told her his story and on her advice applied for a visa debit card against that account and got approved. That was about 12 months ago.

Can any one advise us on what steps to take next really, we would like a joint account but understand that my aprtenrs credit history is affeceting this - how can we improve his credit history i suppose?

Thanks for any help given.

Until his credit rating is repaired, why not just keep things as they are? He's paying you regularly and not defaulting on you.

check all three credit agencies to see what they say

if there are any problems with his reports don't have any joint accounts as this will drag your credit rating down as joint a/cs for financial associations

The very last thing you want to do now is become financially associated with him.

His shaky credit will not increase if you become one, instead yours will become the same as his. Neither of you will get credit.

I'm puzzled about the house getting repo'd if there was no money owed though.

You've also discovered what a waste of money paying for a credit score was. It means diddly squat.

I was happy to apply for a joint account as i thought his credit was repaired - i dont want to do anything to effect my credit rating so certainly wont go applying for further joint accounts.

What are the other 2 credit agencies that we can check with? No money wasted as its free on experian for a 60 day trial.

My partners house was repossessed when he and his ex wife split up after the mortgage was defaulted for how ever long, he has since paid back money owing to the Halifax (full and final payment was abt 3 years ago)

Credit expert and equifax - don't pay for the scores just get the statutory £2 reports.
