igloo is more of a paste than a gel, doesn't sting like bonjela can and sticks to the ulcer much better.

Difflam spray on prescription is good for easing discomfort - time is the only thing that heals them though IMHO

My husband gets a lot of mouth ulcers and although it's very expensive, if his get really bad, he uses the burning cotton bud treatment (sorry, can't remember what it's called!!). It hurts like hell but literally burns the little blighters off. Only get something like 2 in a packet through so not very MSE.

If that's not available he also likes the Rinstead pastilles and the Bonjela paste (not the gel).

I don't know why people get mouth ulcers but in my husband's case, he reckons it was something to do with having braces for so long as a child...
  • I'm another who uses Anbesol, though it's a liquid rather than a paste or gel. As well as helping to heal the ulcer, it has an anesthetic effect and you can apply it as often as you like.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!
  • A natural remedy is garlic.
Cut a clove of garlic in half and squeeze until you can see a drop of garlic oil. Apply this directly to the mouth ulcer. It will sting, but garlic’s antiviral abilities will kill of the mouth ulcer in no time, hopefully by the following morning.

Also see this article which suggests some causes including some toothpastes

When I was little (late 80's/early90's) my mum treated my ulcers with something called 'fradar' (sp) it was a red liquid and u dipped a cotton bud in it and then dabbed the ulcer with the cotton bud, it stung but it worked a treat. Never had ulcers again until I got pregnant last year so went looking for fradar and the chemist said they dont make it anymore! shame cause it really works! So I used Igloo instead and it did actually help as I found bongela useless.

The vast majority of ulcers are apthous ulcers, they are not caused by any infection including viral , certain things can start them off including sls in toothpaste, stress , hormones etc. Most people will get crops of them that last up to two weeks then they resolve by themselves.

However there can be hundreds of causes of ulcers ,everything from B12 deficiency, to ulcerative colitis etc. You should see a dentist for a diagnosis or referral if you are regularly plagued by ulcers or if you have one that hasn't healed after 2 weeks.
