Gone to pot over Christmas

I was really getting my head around money saving and doing really well. Then Christmas came along and my common sense left ! I daren't look at my bank statement at the moment, although I do intend to get back on track in the New Year. I am really peeved with myself tbh and don't know why I let myself get 'carried away' with it all.

  • Hi there.

Well...if people are going to wander off track, then Christmas is definitely one of the major times to do it!

Be brave, open the paperwork and know what you are dealing with. If you don't the debt will still be there and the situation will be worse in the long run eh?

There will be/are loads of people wanting to really get back on track in 2007 so you will have lots of buddies on here to work with.

Come on, it can get sorted. Don't let it drag you down.

  • Thanks for your support. I think I will peek at the balance after the mortage goes out !!! (Coward I know)
  • I don't think you are alone in going off your head spending wise over christmas. The main thing I keep telling myself is that I am aware of it and really really want to deal with it all now. I am sure you are the same xx
5 Year plan. April 2020 to June 2025- CC and mortgage free by time I'm 60
    Currently CC £23,674.36 /£14,895.41/£14315.42
    Mortgage £28,214.65/ £26,254.71/ £25,746.43
    By end 2020 I want CC at £ 19,000.00.
By end 2021 I want CC at £10,000.00
  • By the way, I am guilty of falling off the wagon so to speak, in quite a major way in the early Autumn time.

I was so miffed with myself, a feeling you can relate to I am sure, but I came back much stronger and much more determined to clear the debts.

This might be your second wind (as Moozie called it!) so think positive. You can get creative with your debt repayments, also perhaps post your SOA again to see if there are any savings to be made & thrown at the debts?

Save the energy used to beat yourself up about it and channel it towards making a fresh start. Everyone wobbles - you're not the first and you certainly won't be the last. Learn from it, then move onwards and upwards.
  • Christmas is the best time to have a wobbly moment as New Year was made for new money management resolutions. Don't be cross with yourself- most of us have been there.

  • I totally sympathise because my husband and I have managed to rack up an extra £1000 on a credit card in the last few months alone and I really don't know where half of it's gone! It's disgusting. Anyway, we have recalculated our debt and our debt free date has been pushed back but we are even more determined to succeed now.

Don't let your mistake hold you back from getting debt free - just make a fresh start and learn from it! You're not alone!

Don't beat yourself up too much, at least you've fallen from a better position than you were in before!

Don't ignore it though - you know from experience it WON'T go away!
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
