Tax Code BR?

in Cutting tax
Hi everyone.
Just a quick tax question with regards to my earnings, i work as a bus driver and have since Jan 2010, last week my daughter noticed on my payslip that i didnt have a tax code and only read as BR, which after a quick search means Basic Rate, normally used for a 2nd job etc, as this is my one and only job and source of income i phone the Inland Revenue and they confirmed it was incorrect and i was issued with a code but it was never added in with my earnings, and my tax code should be 759 (cant remember the letters) and i would receive this years rebate on my pay soon as the tax code is added, and in 10 too 15 days time i will receive a letter stated how much rebate i will receive for last year then i couple of days later a cheque.
I know basic rate is charged at 20%, but i have no idea what to expect really for the money owed, one thing i do know is that i have paid over £1000 tax already since April.
Last years earning were about £14000.
I dont know if anyone on here would have a ROUGH idea on the rebates, but would help me relax a little lol.
Thanks again for any input.

Really need more infor to tell you;
How much have you earned this year?
How much tax (exactly) have you paid?Last years earning were about £14000.
Same applies here as above.
Also did you receive any JSA when you were not working?
Did you have a job before the bus driving job?0 -
This year so far £4793 tax paid to date £1005.70
Last year pay £14330.45 Tax paid £3217.17
Hope thats ok. And thanks.

Sorry - should have asked.
Are you paid monthly/weekly? If so which month/week is the above a total for? What are you paid each month/week?Last year pay £14330.45 Tax paid £3217.17
If that was your only income then you have overpaid by £1846.08.
Did you have other earnings or JSA that tax year?0 -
No JSA claimed.
No other earnings.
Weekly paid. Figures from April 2011 till end of July2011. (This year so far £4793 earned, tax paid to date £1005.70)
Weekly pay is around £230 per week, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.
Thanks again for your help Jem.
If i've missed anything please ask.

Rough guide - assuming Week 16. You can check which week it is on your last payslip.
£230pw would see tax of £17.25 taken off normally. If week 16 that would be approximately £276. As you have paid £1005.70 it's roughly £729.70 overpaid.
You can check your own figures here if you like.

Hi,
Before looking into Rebates, have you checked that you have been issued the right tax code since you spotted this? If not call the tax office and get them to re-issue one to your employer asap.

OP says he has.i phone the Inland Revenue and they confirmed it was incorrect and i was issued with a code but it was never added in with my earnings, and my tax code should be 759 (cant remember the letters) and i would receive this years rebate on my pay soon as the tax code is added, and in 10 too 15 days time i will receive a letter stated how much rebate i will receive for last year then i couple of days later a cheque.0 -
Yes just to confirm i have spoken to the tax office and I am waiting for the code to be added and this years rebate to be paid, then the letter and cheque to follow.
So all going well, should be looking roughly at £700 for this year and around £1800 for last year, just goes to show that we take things for granted sometimes, not any more i wont lol.
Thanks again for all your help and i will keep you updated once the payments are made.
Yes this week is week 16.

You need to work it out from the Tax Due section. Basically subtract the Tax Due from the tax you paid to work out the overpayment. This will only work properly with the full year figure.
By the way my figure for last tax year was wrong - forgot to change to 2010/11. You paid £3217.17 and it should have been £1571.09 so overpayment of £1646.08. Sorry about that.
For the current year it's more difficult as it's not a full year yet so I put in your weekly amount to give a rough figure of what you should pay in tax each week.0
