If it is a largish organisation you will probably find you are only required to use a very small part of the total Sage packeage. I would of thought it unlikely that you will be asked to do management reports or journal entries etc.

From my experience SAGE Accounts is quite an easy programme to use, it has been improved drastically since I first started using it ten years ago. If you have access to it the best way I find is to just play around with it and have an explore in your own time. Sage do have training centres around the country although it can be expensive - my company paid nearly £900 for a ten day passport so you could attend the courses you wanted to, the passport is the cheapest way of buying the training but we have always managed to get discounts by asking. Our last ten day passport cost us £750.

Sage payroll is very simple once you have used it a few times - you just need to remember to print off all your pre-update reports before you update LOL

I never saw myself working within accounts and tbh I don't really 'like' it but am good at it which is why I stick with it !!

I do run a payroll but I dont like doing it as there is always something that could go wrong - ie overtime, SMP, SSP etc.

I had never run a payroll before but do know how to calculate wages etc manually which helps.

If you have no payroll experience then you do need training

Sage is pretty easy, anything you don't know can be google'd easily enough!

  • As someone said, it is mostly data entry. I used to manage the payroll in my previous job, but the girl who actually processed the payroll didn't have a clue how to actually do payroll!

Sage can be very easy if you are ok with learning new systems. However be aware there are differences between Sage Line 50 and Sage Line 100 which can be confusing.

As for payroll I have always found that its difficult to be allowed to do it unless you are already experienced in it. Its the one area of accounts I have never been able to get into as I am always rejected for not having the experience. Hopefully since the role is in your current organisation you won't have this problem.
