It has to be paid back - ive just had the same problem with mu work.
All niceties until this happened then they were emailing allsorts of codswallop to try and get me to pay it back in one go.
Thing is i dont even know how much IT is. They havent said , I written, emailed etc asking for payslip, p45 and letter regarding the overpayment but they have not sent any of these - now nearly 2 months after i left still no p45 which it seems thier holding to ransom.
The company has now moved so i have to wait until thier new contact details are on thier website before i can even think about contacting them for my p45.
Legally CA say i can offer what i can pay - if they take it to court it would be done on earnings and theyed probably get £1 a month.
Total Joint Debt £139k
Proud to be dealing with our debts:T0 -
I fully sympatise with you. Apparently I too have been overpaid - 3 months ago I started getting "deputising pay" for an acting up position, but it wasn't in Decembers pay I questioned it and was told I shouldn't have got it in the first place. I still haven't heard about paying it back but its definately going to hurt.planing for the future, living for today

Don't they pay you extra for deputising then? That's a bit tight!
Wish my toddler got paid for 'acting up' - we'd be millionaires!

I agree with the majority ... you should definitely pay it back ... it's good of them to allow you to pay it back in instalments.
You may want to think about, come the summer break from Uni when you will no doubt return home, wouldn't it be useful to be able to do some casual lifeguard hours - if you don't pay it back they'll not even consider it !!!!Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
My work have overpaid me before and because I am in the forces they can take up to 4 days pay off of me in one month. So in Feb of this year, when I was due a pay rise, they overpaid me and I thought it was right. Then in July they decide to take £257 (4days pay) back off me without any prior warning!! So count your self lucky that they offered you a compromise![0

If you really can't afford to repay it - I'd make them an offer. I had a £200 overpayment (albeit because HR lost my sick note and therefore put through my resignation early
) when i did a summer job. I didn't get any parental funding, grants and my student loan was eaten up in rent, food and credit card repayments. I offered £50 and it was accepted thankfully.
Now I don't know your financial circumstances but bear in mind I was on the poverty line at this point and it was impossible for me to pay it for a couple of years, which is what I explained to them alongside my bank statements etc as proof.
I was very fortunate that the company were understanding (and also a large and financially sound) company.£4000 challenge
