Implications of Quebec Contract in the UK

Hi

I recently left my employment in Quebec, Canada and signed a contract to pay back some relocation money. However since my return the company i left has been very uncooperative with providing references and completely ignoring emails from me and my new employer in the UK. Also i havn't heard from my previous company as they were meant to update me on what i owed them. I am therefore in a right mind to forget about them and not pay anything. As the contract I signed states "in accordance with Quebec Law", what validity does this have in the UK if i ignored it?

Thanks

they can get the debt enforced in a quebec court and then oursue through a uk debt collection agency. If it is sufficient money to worry about.

there is no legal obligation to provide references. there is to pay your debts.

They could also seek to enforce Quebec Law in a UK court. As there is a contract in place, I believe UK courts could enforce the contract - and do so according to Quebec Law as this is specified in the contract. This won't apply if the contract specifies the courts to be used for any legal action.

But if they are not forthcoming over how much they are claiming, then there is no point getting too worked up about it. One letter requesting an update and a copy on file should be enough to get legal action stayed, I would think.

OP, you need to look up whether there is any limitations on debt claims under Quebec Law. Under UK Law, debt can become statute barred after 6 years.
