Thank you letter for an interview

I found myself looking for a job last year after 17 yrs of self employment. One agency that I was signed up with recommended that I send a thank you letter. I hadn't heard or even considered this. However I did it after the next three interviews I had, and I subesequently landed my 'ideal' job.
I have since which had to recruit for a vacancy within my department, and only one candidate out of the dozen or so I interviewed bothered with a thank you note. And guess who got the job offer? It wasn't based only on the thank you letter, but it did reinforce their interest.
Just my experience of course, but it is a sign of politeness and courtesy and as mentioned previously does reinforce the candidates interest.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I personally always send a thank you email for jobs i'm particularly keen on, - i go for customer facing roles, and there is nothing wrong with being polite and greatfull. hundreds of people apply for jobs, and if i can do anything to help myself stand out a little i will.Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

I work in the public sector and this wouldn't work because we have panel interviews and if interviewing over 1 day, would make the decision on the same day - so probably wouldn't see the email until after the decision has been made.
I'm not saying that it doesn't work, but as an HR person, it wouldn't make a difference to me.0 -
My last job I was interviewed and got to the last three. I desperately wanted that job, but didnt get it. I decided to phone to ask for feedback and had a long chat with the actual Manager (it had been a panel interview) I got some tips for future interviews, things I should have emphasised, and I wished them well with their chosen recruit.
Three months later I got a phone call out of the blue saying "D'ya want that job" It hadnt worked out with their first choice and the Manager remembered our conversation and hey presto !
Don't be frightened of showing (and explaining why) you would be a good choice.
.............did that job for 15 years, loved every minute, now redundant owing to dreaded cutbacks:(0
