ipod 'repair', now more broken!

Hi, I'm hoping someone here has some kind of knowledge of what rights people have when taking something for repair.
I had an ipod touch, given as a gift by a friend- I unfortunately dropped it and the screen cracked. Took it in to local shop for repair. They were happy to do this and are not a dodgy type shop (they were recommended by Apple reseller shop in area as no proper Apple store, and the ipod would not have been under guarantee as it was accidental damage, apparently). Even with the cracked screen, the ipod did work for e.g. playing music, internet/email, notes, games, etc.
Went back to pick it up yesterday and apparently now it is not working at all- after they replaced the screen it would not turn on. I am quite annoyed about this as it seems it would have been better just to keep it with the cracked screen and working than have a new screen but complete nonfunctioning ipod! Have left it with them as apparently they are going to try and get it working again, but they didn't sound very hopeful.
Does anyone know: do I still have to pay them for the repair since they did repair the screen, but have broken the item more in doing so? Do they have any kind of responsibility to get it working again? The reciept I have from them says they don't take responsibility for data loss, which is fine with me as I'd backed it up, but this is function loss rather than data loss in my opinion. I realise that small electronic items can be difficult to repair but that's why I took it in to a specialist rather than trying to do it myself, and I'd have expected them to tell me that it might completely break it since it was mainly cosmetic damage before.
Thanks for any help!

I thought apple repaired their products themselves?I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

they do, but its expensive, and like the OP says, no apple store nearby
op you took it in for repair, they need to give it back to you in the state you gave it to them with the functionality you gave them it with - if they have caused consequential damage that is their problem - you will have to pay for the repair if they get it working - there may be a investigation fee to pay for the time spent trying to replace the screen if it turns out that they can remove the new screen and return the device to you (in its original state as you gave it to them).0 -

Yes, I think they do, but nearest apple store is a train journey away and the reseller recommended this repair shop. Probably in retrospect I should have planned a train journey to an apple store, but this is not particularly helpful now...0 -

Thank you. I am happy to pay them the full amount for the screen and even extra for the added labour if it comes back working properly- just not really happy to pay them if they give it back not working at all!0
