I totally agree with those who have suggested the Dairy Book of Home Cooking, my mum brought me up on recipes from this book and I bought my own when i left home. I wouldn't be without it... it has every staple meal you could ever want! Proper meals!

When in trouble I always turn to Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course.

I have other cookery books which I use but Delia gets my vote for the all-round most useful one.

The second could be your own - recipes and tips culled from wherever (including your mother).

I agree with LV - Delia's Complete Cookery Course has everything you'll ever need. I find it better than her more recent books as she doesn't use so many trendy ingredients and there are also lots of traditional British dishes as well as pasta and curries etc.

I find the Good Housekeeping books are fab.

i have a few books but at the moment have various recipes from on here written on small bits of paper which are in my baking drawer in an old yeast box - I am hoping to one day type them all up or copy and paste them- possible with photos into one of those A4 project display folders.

I have an old bero ncookbook which is fab for home baking

But if she wants to buy you a book how about asking for a mag sub to easy cook? Its by the bbc and all the recipes in there are normally real food, none of this where you have to go trawling round all the shops looking for an ingrediant youve never heard of:D
