but that also means they cant make you do it. I never even knew you could do this untill someone in my old place had a baby and she was told by someone in payroll although the directors didn't want her to know that.

Which according to the rules is very missleading.

if you work SMP stops and cannot restart

maternity leave has to be a single continous period except for the KIT days.
