Head in the sand!

For the last year ive burried my head in the sand with regard to debt my DH was paid off from his job i had given up work as i was ill at the time so we were up the creek with no paddle went to CAB and the basically said you have no money we'll write to everyone and sort it, im sure you all know how spul destroying it can be having no money at this point i became pregnant my DH got a job and everything was rosey however for some reason we didnt start paying debts again.

I know it was stupid and im so ashamed of myself im a mother now and need to get a grip of my life im fed up of the scary letters and my heart leaping into my mouth when my door goes, ill do a SOA in the morning though use an ipod touch so im not sure how to copy and paste.

My debt tbh isnt more than £5000 all in we should be able to pay these i just dont know where to start.

Thanks for reading, i really needed to get it all out xxx

Hiya Laura, you have made good start logging on here. Help will be along, when you post your soa.

I know exactly where you are coming from. Both my DH and I have not been unemployed (DH will be in 2 weeks time) and have no children at home. and yet I have £2.500 debt that I know of and £???? than with DCA but I always shredded them, no idea what the total of them are . But have resolved to deal with them when they arrive from now on. I have nothing to show for my debt, which means I Have wasted it all.

So you are not alone, there are many of us here.

Hang in there and Keep posting and I will keep and eye on your thread. Just post your daily rambling and issues as they arise, we all in this together, we all help each other through.

    Hello Laura

You're person 99967 who has come to this board with the exact same problem. You're not alone.

However, in order to offer some useful advice, you will need to hit the stickies at the top of this forum and fill out an SOA (statement of affrairs). This isnt so we can all have a pry into your life, but it's difficult to give any constructive help without knowing the full picture.

Hi - a couple of suggestions from me:
    1) it might be worth getting a copy of your credit reports from all 3 agencies - 1 to get a rough idea of where you are and 2 because it will probably get the debt collectors out of the woodwork and you can start sorting things out.
    2) I'd do a full and thorough budget - don't forget to include everything you are likely to spend throughout the year including birthday presents, haircuts- everything - if you don't include it you will soon be scrabbling about and the budget will start to unravel on you.
    3) Once you've budgetted for everything you can see how much per month you have availabel to pay your creditors - this may be a lot or it may be very little but it is what it is. You will probably then have to try and come to some sort of payment agreements with the creditors - if one creditor has 23% of your debt toal then you should aim to pay them 23% of your debt repayments per month so as to demonstrate you are treating them fairly. Another option that may be worth looking at is a DRO which is like a bankruptcy-lite or mini-bankruptcy.
    4) your local CAB should again be able to help with this or you could try National Debtline or CCCS. Also if you post all the details up here as suggested by Firewyrm them people can make suggestions for you.
