Relocating But Not Sure When

I'll be relocating soon but I don't know exactly when. I think I should be applying for jobs in the new area now but my GF says that employers won't even consider me before I've moved - or at least have a definite date. I feel I've got nothing to lose by applying now but, on the other hand, if an employer were to reject me now for the reasons I've explained, could that employer reject me again once I'd moved because of the previous rejection.

I cant see a problem with applying for jobs now, maybe say you are looking to move locally soon. How far you relocating to.

If you were offered a job in the new location would you be able to move quickly to take up the post? Most employers will accept that a new employee if currently employed somewhere else would need to give a months notice. If you're not employed then it's reasonable for an employer to expect you to be available to start work almost immediately. Is this going to be a problem?

We've moved around a lot over the years for a variety of reasons and have always had a job to go to - there's no way we'd voluntarily move to a new area without already having lined up a job. When filling out applications, in the other information/personal statement part it's important to write why you are applying for a job far away from your current location. Career progression and moving closer to family are two acceptable reasons for applying for a job in a different location.

If you're able to move to start a new job and can confirm this on your application/ at interview, I don't see why applying for jobs before you move would be a problem and would actually seem to be the sensible option.
  • I think that's the key - if you're available to start work within a month of getting the job, then employers don't really care where you're coming from and to. As long as you can relocate quickly, this shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps if you have an idea of where you want to go, you can look into b&bs in the area and into more long term accommodation costs just to give you an idea to help you move quickly.

why not? that will make a difference.

if waiting on some key event that stops you moving like granny is dying then it's too early.

if is't because you are looking for somewhere to buy then you can change that by renting.

I would put in the covering letter that you are relocating to the area and leave it at that.
