Been in job for 6 months, what to do...

Hello everyone

I need some advice with my dilemma. I currently work for a Non Departmental Public Body. I have been in my role for 6 months, just passed probation and been confirmed as permanent member of staff.

I was in my prev role for 14 months, I left as it was a fixed term contract.

The issue is where I work currently we are due to become part of an Excecutive Agency of a Government Department/Ministry making us Civil Servants. No one currently knows what will happen to my Deparment, whether we are going to be made redundent, keep our roles or have a role in the new Agency. We should have a better idea in about 6 months time, managers have however said our roles would be safe for at least the next 12-18 months.

What I would like advice on is should I start looking for other work now, should I wait 6 months as I will have a better idea as to how things would pan out. Should I wait to become a Civil Servant as apparently this will open more opportunities with other departments in Civil Service (i.e. promotion, lateral transfer).

If I was to apply for jobs from now rather than wait say 6-12 months, would this look bad with the employer. I obviously don't want to come off as a job hopper. Would an employer understand if I explained the situation to them.

Thanks in advance.

Why not stay where you are and worry closer to the time about redundancy or whatever will happen
  • my own view on this is that the first job was a fixed contract so you didn't up and leave and you were not sacked, you just ended the employment.

The second is you looked for another job because of the uncertainty. Nothing wrong in that.

To me I would only start getting worried if you didn't stay in jobs over 3 or 4 jobs.

Thanks for the prompt reply Googlewhacker, do you think it's adviseable for me to start looking for other jobs now or should I wait 6 months when I should have a better idea as to where I stand.

Edit: Just saw your response, DCFC79, thanks.

I think I would hang on assuming you actual like what you do.

One thing I would do though is become very interested in what is going on.

become the right person for whatever happens.

    watch you back.

    Could end up good.

Default entry to the civil service can't be all bad AIUI easier to get out than in.

If your happy where you are then why not stay, you can keep on keeping an eye out for something else and if 1 takes your fancy then apply for it.

It is better to wait and stay with your work. I understand that you are on a fixed contract, so you still have the job until the end of your contract. Better to wait since there might be a possibility that they will absorb you in a new position. But if a month before the end of your contract and there are no move of re-hiring you, then that's the time you look for another job.
  • I agree, there's no harm in looking but keep going in your current job as no one yet knows the outcome.
