What type of insurance needed for freelance beauty service?

Hi there,

My friend is thinking of starting up a home beauty service (nails/makeup/waxing etc). she has all the relevant qualifications/certs etc, and was wondering what types of insurance or other liability cover are needed to cover the types of beauty work that is carried out from home.

Anyone able to offer any links to reputable beauty insurance providers etc?

Thanks in advance

I would think BABTAC would be her first stop. If she is qualified she may well already be a member. They offer insurance for beauty therapists.

Legally, unless she has employees, there is no requirement for insurance. That said, it would be highly prudent for her at a minimum to get public liability insurance. She may want to get some form of content/ stock insurance if she has a reasonably high value of machines, lotions and potions too.

She should also inform her home insurers, especially if customers are visiting the property. Plus her car insurance if she is intending to offer any form of mobile service

Besides babtac, any other recommended companies for Public Liability Insurance?

Most insurers/ brokers that cover SMEs will do PL for beauticians. Whilst there are no true aggregators (like confused.com) for business insurance most do have links to brokers that will provide quotes (like simplybusiness). Should be able to get something for sub £100 assuming it is PL only

I used to use professional beauty, they charge aroung £40/50 per annum.

If you dont have insurance your in real trouble, if something goes wrong.

I wouldnt use anyone who didnt have insurance, and I thought you had to have insurance

Legal requirements are purely for National Insurance (if you earn enough), Motor insurance (if your driving a motorised vehicle on a public highway) and Employers Liability (if you employ non-family members).

Contracts can stipulate that you must hold additional forms of insurance - the contract with my clients say I must hold £2m of Professional Indemnity for example - but these are not "legal" requirements.

Given how cheap PL is however it is a very questionable thing to decide not to buy it for almost any business.
