Job offer question

Just out of curiousity if you go for an interview and are successful then is it acceptable to state that you're waiting for other applications you've applied for to reply or is it best to just say you want it and lose out on the other opportunities or agree to work for the first company but then get an offer from another that you'd rather work for and go with them? I'm just wondering how it works

It's your call really. Employers understand that you will have applied for more than one job and normally give you some time to get back to them. However some places may insist that you get back to them with your decision in a week or something.
Does the job start immediately ? If not you can just accept it and then change your mind if you get a better offer. I would advise aginst doing this - however if they give you an unreasonably short time frame to accept the job I see nothing wrong with it.0 -
You have as much time as you want to accept or reject an offer but the potential employer can chose to timebox you or retract the offer.
If you've had last round interviews with other places and are just waiting the response then it is perfectly normal. If you only sent the application form off last night and the closing date is in 3 weeks then you are probably not going to want to wait but you could always speak to those that you've got outstanding, advise them you have an offer on the table and see if they accelerate their timescales.0 -
I want to employ someone who has me as their first choice employer so I'd give you 24 hours then move on to my runner up for most jobs.Debt free 4th April 2007.

It depends on the company hiring and also on your side. Which parties go both ways. If the company is hiring and is on START IMMEDIATELY procedure. Then you've gotta decide and pick your choice. Same goes to your side as well if you really wanted a work then you can just say I can start right away.
But it would be a great offer if you can think and realize which job offer you will be accepting. Because you can just think of the outcome of your position the moment you start to work.don't invest on something non profitable.

I have always chosen the employer who has offered me the job first, simple as really.0

Quite a reasonable path, although not what I choose. I generally accept job offers right off, with the rare exception that I find a job I might prefer doing slightly more over another which is offering slightly less money. I will phone and see if there is any flexibility over the wage, explaining the situation openly (except which I would really prefer) and asking if I can get back to them the following day. But if you're waiting for offers still, I'd accept and then discuss it with them if you get a better offer.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
It probably depends on the job and the professional relationship with the company. And supply and demand. If what you do is unique then it's easier.
I have a number of companies wanting me to work for them. None are ideal due to location and I have been very honest.
They need me more than I need them and they accept if I find something better for me (ie not in London when live in north) I will not be coming to work for them.June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving

October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
Make sure it is an unconditional offer so if they still need something like a reference it is back in their ball park.
Watch out for the start tomorrow on a conditional offer.
If you know your references you can get them to delay if you need a bit more time.
You can't resign till you have an unconditional so you also have your notice period to play with..
It's up to you how much you are prepared to mess people about0
