pelirocco, the person who is hiring the van, in this case the posters Dad is responsible for the damage. Depending on the insurance and I presume it was the hire companies, as long as the drivers details were declared, which I understand they were, it's legal.0

pelirocco-Yes i thought it was a bit extreme but it is quite an old van,i'll have to check my paperwork for reg details. The woman in the garage even said it was old...... and she told it that it wasn't due to be hired out again until the 30th now.Time to stop wasting money and start saving some!! :T0

They will only use there own garage to carry out the repair so any quote for work done will be in house, you can dispute this and ask for another quote to be done, I dont think you will knock much off of the bill but if you are unhappy then tell them you require another quote, even if you take it in to an independent car repair place yourself and see if there is a difference, they cannot make you have the repair done in house , but ask for the paperwork on the repair quote and ring round a few places, you may save yourself a few quid, but they wont want to entertain the thought of the insurance, I fought with the garage over mine and in the end give up as it was like dealing with a chimps tea party !0

I wasnt sure from the OPs original post whether the driver was named as an insured driver , the OP did clear this up a few posts back .Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

To be fair to the hire company its perfectly reasonable that they would want to oversee the repairs .
Probably a lesson in how its rarely the cheapest option to move yourself;)Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

Fair yes, compulsory no, they cannot force you to have the work done in there own garage they will suggest and try and get it done there but you are well within your rights to look at a cheaper alternative !0 -
Hi there
Can you try talking to the garage owner rather than the receptionist?
A while ago an uninsured driver went into the back of a hire car that had been supplied to me via a garage while my car was being repaired (on my insurance policy). The mare of a receptionist did a huge number on me, saying it was really bad, would have to pay the £500 excess etc. I did some girly weeping (genuine at the time!), and the owner came out and told me not to worry about it, they'd be repairing inhouse, and it wasn't a big dent. The receptionist looked like she was chewing a thistle!
If it's not too much of a treck, maybe go and talk to the organ grinder not the monkey! Good luck.0 -
Hi,just thought i'd update you all. I got a call from the garage today to say its costing £350 instead of £500 and after paying £100 today they have agreed for us to pay the rest over the next 2 weeks.
Thankyou all for your replies, and yes definitely a lesson learnt!Time to stop wasting money and start saving some!! :T0
