Help! Have an idea for a new product and no clue where to start

Options
Hi!

I have an idea for a new product and have no clue where i should begin - I have searced the forums to see if there is a thread already but cant seem to find one.

I just dont know where to start, do i try to get a patent or how do i see if my idea has been done before?

ANY HELP would be appreciated!!

You try and see if your idea has been done before, there's no point in applying for a patent on something that already has a patent.

Don't forget, just because nobody is selling your "idea/product" it doesn't mean someone didn't think of it earlier and patented it. It may just mean they found it was a non starter.

I read about Dyson (the hoover man) running a sort of Dragons Den thing to help young entrepreneurs.

  • If it's something you want 'designed', eg you have an idea for a kitchen 'thingy' and you don't know where to start, there's a company in Accrington. Lancashire, who design things to your specification/idea.

Google them at Peel Park Design. I've no idea how much they charge or anything, but I know it's quite a unique service they offer.

By applying for a patent. If someone has done it before, your patent would be rejected on those grounds. The idea may also be so old that it is in the Public Domain. Don't let any of this stop you. Go for it.
