Tesco Price Checker: do your maths

Has anyone had any experience of Tesco Price Check returning a wrong result?

I did some shopping yesterday; I checked and checked again the prices before and after the shopping and my basket should have returned a £4.55 receipt. However, MrT only gave me a 63p voucher, as it didn't seem to register that 4 of the items in my basket were on special offer (yet the T&C state that all multi-savers and price-cut promotions published on A's website are included).

Have I been just unlucky, or is this a processing fault in the Price Checker which has happened before?

  • It generally includes offers.

Did you shop for any other items at the same time?
If you list the items on your receipt...or copy & paste your price check results, I (or some-one:D) will be able to look at it for you.

Most definitely I should have received a £4.55 voucher (I had 4 packs of Special K 750gr, 1 pack SpecialK 500gr, and nothing else).

What has happened is that T failed to account for the fact that the 750gr boxes are on offer is A at £3 each.

    So I should have received 89p x 4 (for the 750gr boxes) + 99p (for the 500gr box).

The Asda offer was of course in place when I went to the store (yesterday), as I checked their prices against T's before leaving home.

As I said, I had nothing else in my basket; I just wanted to stock up on our favourite cereal and was pleased I could get JTD on top of that.

Oh, looks like you're right then. Never known that to happen.

Did you pay full price in Tesco for the cereal? I noticed a sign saying all cereals were 3 for 2 but didn't look at it too closely.

Yes I paid full price for the items, and my receipt came at £18.55. The Special Ks were on full price and I didn't notice any offer for them in Mr T.

I would't have minded not getting a voucher back had they been on offer but I chose T even though I knew Asda was cheaper 'safe' in the knowledge that T would have given me the difference back.

Now I wonder can I trust them again, do I have to sit down with a calculator and check that their vouchers are correct?

This is a massive hassle. It is easy to see that for a shop like I did yesterday (just 5 boxes of cereals) the voucher did not add up correctly, but what if you have a big shopping list?

Surely this must have happened before?

Anyway, if someone has bought the SpecialK 750gr, can you tell me how your receipt comes back?

They were, but I think that offer has finished now. It's not showing on line any more. (Must admit I stocked up a little during the offer.)

That actually would give you 4 packs of the £3.89 cereal for £11.67 (3x £3.89 plus one free) plus the £2.99, Tesco total, £14.66.

    Asda total..4x£3 + £2 is £14, so a difference of 66p.

I think you may have solved it.
Okay, the 66p doesn't quite equate with the 63p. but maybe the larger packs were £3.88 during the promotion & have since gone up 1p?

Edit: It looks like we've cross posted & you did pay full price.:(
The fact you paid full price should have been picked up during the comparison.
Sadly, they do say they won't enter into discussion on this, so don't think you'll get anything apart from the standard reply from CS.
The only thing I can suggest is to ask on Twitter. I raised a query this way some time ago & CS actually rang me to sort it out.
    Good luck.

I gurantee you that yesterday the Special Ks 750gr were not on offer; I paid £3.89 for each pack as clearly stated in my receipt. No multi-buy offer was applied at all.

    So my receipt is:
    3.89 x 4 (for the 750gr boxes)
    2.99 x 1 (for the 500gr box)

    Total spent in Tesco: £18.55

Had I spent £14.66 as you suggest, I would be quite happy, but I didn't.

The voucher they sent back comes at 63 p because they have correctly registered £2 as the price for the 500gr box in Asda, BUT they have used £3.99 as the Asda price for the 750gr box - this is the mistake because the 750gr box is £3 in Asda.

I hope I'm making sense I'm pretty sleepy!
  • Items NOT being compared happened MANY times during DTD. More annoyingly things that were checked in the past consistently suddenly stopped being checked and vice versa.

I wouldn't trust Tescos to consistently check goods against Asda and wonder why people who shop at Tescos HOPING they price check against Asda, take the risk. OK if you've not got an Asda nearby BUT not if you can choose where to shop.

Asda price difference is FAR better than Tescos now - diff + 10% - compared against Sainsburys, Morrisons, Tesco etc. I've been pleasantly surprised when I get a refund, often compared against Morrisons - which is too far away for me to shop AND my basket contained whoopsies - which Asda take out before comparing. Add 1 good whoopsie to your shop in Tesco & it's compared at FULL price against Asda.

Yeah I KNOW you get points BUT I'd prefer a guaranteed sum in my purse instead

Well I'm sort of glad this happened to soeone else but I still find it outrageous.

I mean, we are talking the SAME product here, just different sizes. So they give you JTD on a medium box but not the large one: what is the logic here? And where in their T&C does it say this is possible?

Sorry I'm pretty angry with Tesco right now.

And yes WisIReadItSooner I agree, money in your pocket is better than JTD but Tesco is more convenient for me to drive to; I would not have been able to get to Asda until Wednesday at the sooner (due to transport logistics in my household) , by which time the Asda offer price may have disappeared so I went to Tesco.

What we're talking here it's not even an 'odd' product that is difficult to compare. It is a nation-wide, pretty standard cereal sold everywhere. if you cannot price-compare a branded item such as that then one has to wonder what price-ckeckeer is all about....

..... and I suspect now perhaps it is about lulling us into a sense of security so we go and shop there assuming we will not be screwed on price but then they screw us after all.

In any case, I will call CS tomorrow as this seems to me a pretty obvious breach of their price-checker T&Cs.
