I've got a 6.5l and a 1.5l, the big one is used for big joints of meat or batch cooking, the small one is used for doing small gammon joints, pease pudding or rice pudding. There's only 3 of us so I tend to use the small one more often so it's left out all the time, the big one lives in the cupboard and comes out when I need it.
If I had to make a choice between the two I would definitely get a big one, I've cooked small amounts in it with no problems.
