Universit Loan - PGCE Year

My daughter is going into Year 2 at University in September. If she does a PGCE Year after her 3 years, will she have to pay the increased fees or will she still stay on the fees now. Any help appreciated.

No, as she started university whilst the fees were reduced the university will honour it until she graduates even though the course is a post grad as long as she doesn't take any years out.

    Remaining to pay off: £1370.95
  • Thank you - is that the same if she chooses another Uni to do her PGCE Year

That's wrong lovey, if you start an entirely separate course you will pay the fees at the time of starting the new course. Check any university website if you're not sure!

Oh dear, my sister has gone back to uni to do her teaching degree, she started last year, afterwards she would need to do her PGCE, she is also under the illusion that her course fees would not be at the higher rate.

My Head of Department told me that he thought it unlikely that postgraduate course fees would rise by anywhere near what undergraduate fees are due to, because there are a lot less postgrads so the additional income from extra fees wouldn't be enough to counter the likely drop in numbers. As RSNK says fees haven't been set yet but hopefully they will remain reasonably close to what they are now.

She'll pay whatever the going rate is for the PGCE in the year she does it. These are usually substantially less than other courses.

but... don't worry about fees too much. Check out Martins blog on the subject (no idea how to post links!) - apparently someone on a 'normal' salary will pay back no more than they would have done before the higher fees before the loan is cancelled. Unless she expects to be ahead teacher she's unlikely to be less well off, and if she's going to be a head she'll be loaded anyway ;)

The average salary of a head teacher was about £53,000 on the last survey. So hardly loaded.

In the whole of Yorkshire and Humber only 4 primary headships have been advertised at more than 70k in the last 3 years. Most are under 60k.
