Although I have a foundation degree and a degree, I am thinking of starting studying again - this time with the OU. I have completed a couple of courses in the past, and I found it a great way to study as you can choose your own times. For me, it also means not having to find childcare, which is difficult enough for most people, but a nightmare when you have a disabled child.

I also find that the necessary organisational skills with the OU spill over into the rest of your life and help you to become more disciplined. I just need to decide what to study.......
  • I don't think the OU is saying the OU isn't for her but from what I'm getting (OP may correct me!), she would prefer to learn with a blended approach rather than pure distance learning. I know I've learned better this way too.

Your question - Is there anything you can do if you want the time off?

Ask to drop to part time hours, as someone said, if you go to 3 days a week they may be more amenable
    Find another job.

I wonder how effectively you've made the business case for your study, as well?

Suppose they did give you one day a week as unpaid leave to go and do this course, do they NEED someone else with this qualification? Or are you likely to be job hunting as soon as you've finished (or even before)?
