face creams seem to stop working?

I got a nice bit of cashback recently. So I really did spoil myself and bought that devine cream from l'occitane which is £60
Never spent that much before ! Anyhow it made my face feel lovely. I'd been ill with a heavy cold for a while and my skin felt parched. Anyhow worked great for about a month, then my skin seemed to take it for granted and stopped 'looking' as hydrated. So I reached for a pot of cream I got from Avon for a couple of quid their rich moisture cream. Miraculously it felt great again. So obvious point on my expense of the devine cream. Though I don't necessarily feel that bad about it. Won't do it again.
For me a face cream seems to work for a while and then it seems to stop working and I have to change to get a benefit. Anyone else get this? or am I imagining this.

dermatologists do say you should change your creams regularly as they will often start being less effective. It was Patrick Bowler of Court House Clinics that said this in an article, but am afraid I cannot find it again!0

I've found this. I find it takes my skin longer to get used to (or indeed build up a reaction to) creams, rather then it being months, its years for me.
I used to love the Clarins Beauty Flash balm, infact as a teen I used to be able to put pretty much anything on my face and come out relativly unscathed! (Everything from sunscreen made for the body through to vaseline, Nivea's Creme...etc. I would go through phases of applying cream for a week or two then stop out of boredom, my face didn't really need it. Now if I use any of those options and infact a whole load of others (Boots No.7: any of the range, Olays facial creams, Cliniques Dramaticly Different cream....all the decent freebies!) I get horrible spots! It seems to have been something which has occured to my skin bit by bit: two years ago the Clarins was fine, this year no. I have no idea why my skin is becoming more sensitive with age, you'd think it would be the opposite way around! Instead of getting used to products, it seems to be building up newer reactions to them!
I do chop and change though, I survive on freebies and samples donated by well meaning friends and relatives. Two types I seem to get on with are Nuxe and L'Oreal's Youth Code though just trying a sample of the Elemis daily facial cream and this seems fine (thanks mum!).
I'd suggest maybe mixing up things a bit? Going one or two months on one cream and the next on a second before reverting back to the first the month after this. Could help if your getting to the end of a pot, finding its no longer working and struggling to find something else to try.0 -

This happens to me too, to put it nicely its called having intelligent skin:rotfl:I find it fine to chop and change products so they keep working for you a bit like hair care I guess, personally I try to avoid products with mineral oil in and then move around within the products I know work well for me:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

Saying that though, apparently you need to give your skin a month to really know whether the product is working for your skin or not as the skin renews roughly every 28 days. This is easier said than done though as if I start using a product and within a few days I'm covered in spots, I'm not going to give that product the benefit of the doubt for 28 days! My skin builds up a tolerance to products very quickly; anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months and this is annoying because the 'eureka' of feeling like I've finally found something that works is short lived
Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.0 -
In the past few years I've only used one moisturiser, Olay Radiance one. I've found that perfect for my skin. I guess all of our skins are different. I might find another cream works better than the one I use, I just haven't tried it! I like the one I've got because it's not too expensive as well as being good. I do need another cream for when my nose gets really dry though, need a thicker one for that.0

other comments from Patrick Bowler:
you dont 'need' eye cream, just put on a much smaller amount (becuase skin thinner) of what you use on rest of your face.
If using creams stick to ones from same range as different serums may not work so well with different moisturisers or night creams even made by same company0
