creditors have started calling...

Hi All

Just waiting for my DMP to be set up. Sent off "holding letters" to creditors just before Christmas. Started to get calls today about the letters. Bearing in mind my letter asks that they wait until Payplan get in touch, should I call them back, or just ignore them? There's not much I can tell them that I haven't already said in the holding letter and my SOA will be passed on by payplan.... I must admit, I'm not keen to speak to them, as I think it might tip me over the edge (mentally that is!) have coped pretty well so far...

Would appreciate any thoughts on what is the best thing to do...

  • Did the letters ask them not to contact you?
I would ignore them for now and if you get any telephone calls explain your situation and ask for everything to be put in writing. If they persist put the phone down on them.
  • Evening furrypaws, what a horrible time of year for them to start the harassment  I wouldn't phone them back as they all use 0870 numbers which cost a fortune,if they phone you, just tell them, politely, that you have put things in writing and that Payplan will be in touch with them shortly.Don't let them get to you, they will be very horrible, but that is what they do to everyone,it's nothing personal, the worst thing you could do is offer them any more money, stick to the agreement, they do eventually stop
    Best of luck

  • It's so nice to be able to speak to other people who have gone through the same things... really appreciate your replies. I'm more than happy to go on ignoring them, having someone horrible on the end of the phone really is the last thing I need. It was the thing that worried me the most when I finally decided to go for the DMP. Its all rather scary :o

  • Hi furrypaws

I have been on a dmp for three months now & have to say that not one of my creditors has been horrible to me. Most have been perfectly polite & pleasant. One was a little bit patronising, but that was just one call.

I found that although I didnt want to talk to them at first, I felt better for actually speaking to them, although I had nothing new to tell them and said no to any requests for payment, simply telling them I didnt have the money.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :j

It's the horrid phone calls that I'm most dreading too - but good on you for taking action.
As already mentioned, don't waste your money on returning their calls and if they call & you answer try not to show that they are upsetting you - and above all don't give them any money! At a guess I'd say that if you cave in once they are more likely to keep trying, so try to stay strong -and if they start to get to you log onto here, I'm sure you'll get lots of support.
    Wishing you lots of strength,
