What would you cook?

I've just organised my friend, her husband and 2 kids to come over on new years day for the day and night.
We've agreed not to have a roast dinner as we're all a bit fed up with roasts. She's insisting she doesn't want me in the kitchen the whole time and suggests doing something really simple.
I thought about doing sausage casserole and mash for dinner, with salad and "picky" bits for tea.
What would you people cook that's yummy for adults and kids but easy?

I think your sausage casserole is an excellent idea! Served with some fresh crusty bread - you've made my mouth water!Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

Spag bol or chili

Or I would (if there are alot of kids) lay out a diy sandwich spread for the kids - ham, cheese, salami, lettuce, mayo, spreads and lots of sliced bread. Let them do it themselves preferably in the kitchen while you and the other adults eat hummus and bread/crackers (or similar). Whilst all that is happening you should have a simple spicy chicken/beef/lamb casserole/curry simmering away which the adults can enjoy while the kids watch Pirates of the Carribean 2 in another room
Ice cream for everyone.

I think sausage and mash sounds just about perfect. Serve with a yummy onion gravy. Serve a pud at tea time with something like cheese and crackers or roasted pepper couscous.0

go mexican?
Tacos. Lay the stuff on the table (shells, spicy minced beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, peppers, salsa) and let people wade in. Fun for the kids, you only have to do some mince and warm the shells
