Flight bags & holdalls

With friends having scattered around the country, I'm finding myself on more weekend trips to places these days, only problem is I've not got any small luggage! So far been carrying things stuffed in a tote (?) style bag, but this isn't really suitable as there's no zip or "lid" to keep the contents in out of prying eyes and hands
Am off on a weekend trip to Scotland at the end of January and going by budget airline (same price, but about 7 hours less travelling!), so am hoping to find something suitable for using as handluggage (i.e. able to squish into the dimensions: 55 x 40 x 20cm allowed on the Ryanair site!)
Any ideas?
This one in Argos is only £15, and this set is only £18 - but I'm not sure if flight bags are "roomy" enough to hold a couple nights clothes and bits...
Anyone have any recommendations? Would I be better off with a rucksack, and if so are they having any problems in airports?

Just been to Prague with a 25 litre rucksack as carry-on. HOWEVER, if you want to take any sharp objects the bag will have to go in the hold, and aren't Ryanair going to charge for that soon? My sister was with me and we put liquids in her flight bag in the hold. If you wear the bulky stuff onto the plane (coat jumper etc) then should be OK with smaller bag.0

When booking Ryanair stated charges if checking in any baggage, so we've opted for the cheap-o "squish all we can into handluggage" option since it's only a couple of days.
Did they check the size using that.... wozzitcalled... shape measuring slot thing (where you put the bag in the cage to see if it fits their dimensions) or did they just okay the rucksack as it was?:rotfl:0 -
we were on Easyjet at Stanstead. Didn't use the measuring thingamijig, but just asked the check-in girl. Didn't blink at my rucksack, but she thought the stewards on board might have a problem with my sister's bag. It must be OK to go in the overhead lockers, although looking at what other people were taking on, we shouldn't have worried!0
