Changing name on bank account

Hi 6 years ago I split from my then partner we had joint account at the Halifax in my name and also in his name. When we split I ask the Halifax to close the account but they refused saying they needed both our signatures, so I contacted my ex partner and he refused to sign. As the account had no money it and i did not know what else to do I left it. Now 6 years down the line i received a solicitors letter acting on behalf a debt collect company saying I owed them £719 against this account at the Halifax. I contacted the Halifax and they stated the account had been active until they froze it in November 2010 owing to an oustanding overdraft debt which with charges amounted to £719. I knew nothing about this and it would appear that my ex partner had been using the account and had run up this debt. The bank are now saing that I am liable to pay these charges. Can anyone advise me pls dont know what to do as I am single mum with my ex partners children and only work part time
